What to Pack for Swim Lessons: The Complete Swim Bag Checklist

/ Swim Lessons

One of the most common questions new swim lesson parents ask is simple: What do I need to bring? It is an easy thing to overthink, especially before your first lesson. The good news is that the list is shorter than you might expect, and once you have a routine down, packing for swim lessons takes about two minutes.

At Big Blue Swim School, we have helped thousands of families get ready for their first day in the pool. Here is everything you need, what is optional, and a few insider tips from parents who have been doing this for years.

The Swim Lesson Packing List

1. A Dedicated Swim Bag

A bag you keep packed and ready specifically for swim lessons makes the whole routine easier. Many families swear by a wet/dry bag, which has a separate waterproof compartment for wet suits and towels after the lesson. If your bag is not waterproof, a plastic bag works fine for keeping wet items contained on the way home.

2. A Well-Fitting Swimsuit

Choose a suit that fits snugly and does not slide down anywhere on your child’s body. Beyond fit, color matters more than most parents realize. Bright, high-contrast colors like neon orange, yellow, and lime green provide the best visibility in open water environments, according to testing by ALIVE Solutions Inc. A suit that is easy to spot is a safer suit.

3. Swim Diapers (Required for Non-Potty-Trained Children)

This one is non-negotiable. At Big Blue Swim School, all children who are not fully potty trained are required to wear a snug-fitting reusable swim diaper with a disposable swim diaper underneath every single lesson. That double-layer requirement is there for good reason: a fecal incident in a pool can force the facility to close for up to 24 hours. No child will be allowed in the pool without both layers.

If you forget swim diapers on lesson day, Big Blue’s pro shop carries them for purchase. And do not forget to pack regular diapers and wipes for after the lesson.

4. Goggles

Not every child needs goggles right away. Younger beginners may not be ready for them, and that is completely fine. Big Blue recommends goggles for children ages three and up once they reach the Bright Blue level. When shopping, fit is everything. The goggle should create a gentle seal around the eye socket without leaving red marks or indentations. If it leaves marks, it is too tight.

Beyond comfort, goggles help kids see clearly underwater and encourage better technique. Many kids find the water a lot more fun once they can actually see where they are going.

5. Swim Cap (Optional but Recommended for Longer Hair)

A swim cap is not required at Big Blue, but it is genuinely helpful for children with longer hair. It keeps hair out of the eyes during lessons, reduces post-swim tangles, and helps keep goggles securely in place. Big Blue recommends swim caps for children whose hair covers their ears. If your child resists wearing one, that is okay too.

6. Towel and a Change of Clothes

A larger beach towel or a hooded towel works well for drying off after a lesson. Every Big Blue facility has individual changing rooms, so children can change in privacy before or after their lesson. If your child arrives in their swimsuit, be sure to pack clothes for the trip home.

7. A Post-Swim Snack and Water Bottle

Technically not an essential but ask any Big Blue parent and they will tell you the snack bag is a must. Big Blue kids swim more during their lessons than at most other programs, and they will be hungry when they get out of the pool. A simple snack and a water bottle ready to go makes the post-lesson car ride a lot smoother.

8. Shower Supplies

Every Big Blue Swim School has showers on the pool deck with soap dispensers already available, so you do not have to bring anything if you prefer not to. For families who like their own products, travel-size shampoo and body wash are easy to tuck into the bag. A small detangler spray and a wet brush designed for use on wet hair are popular additions, especially for kids with longer or thicker hair. A little skin lotion for after the shower is a nice touch in drier climates.

9. Water-Friendly Footwear (Optional)

Big Blue facilities use fall-proof, antimicrobial carpet throughout, so flip-flops and water shoes are not a safety requirement. That said, some kids love having a pair of swim shoes or sandals to wear to and from the pool, and they are easy to slip on and off. Totally optional, but a nice addition if your child likes them.

10. Ear and Nose Plugs (If Needed)

Big Blue instructors work with every swimmer to build comfort going fully underwater, and the approach works well for most kids. That said, you know your child best. If health concerns or sensory sensitivities make the experience more successful with ear or nose plugs, bring them. The goal is always for swimmers to feel confident and comfortable in the water. Whatever helps get them there is welcome.

A Few Things You Do Not Need to Bring

Since Big Blue facilities are purpose-built for swim lessons, a few things parents sometimes pack are already taken care of.

You do not need to bring your own soap or shampoo. The showers are stocked. You do not need water shoes for safety reasons since the flooring handles that. And you do not need to worry about a place to wait. Every Big Blue has a comfortable, Wi-Fi-equipped viewing lounge where parents and caregivers can watch the lesson from start to finish. Bring a book or a tablet if you want something to do, but the lounge is genuinely a nice place to sit and watch your child learn.

Frequently Asked Questions About What to Pack for Swim Lessons

What should I pack for my child’s first swim lesson?

The basics are a well-fitting swimsuit, a towel, and a change of clothes. If your child is not potty-trained, a reusable swim diaper worn over a disposable swim diaper is required. Goggles are recommended for children ages 3 and up. Everything else on the list is helpful but not strictly necessary on day one.

Are swim diapers required at Big Blue Swim School?

Yes. Any child who is not fully potty-trained must wear a disposable swim diaper underneath a reusable swim diaper for every lesson. Both layers are required, not just one. Swim diapers are available for purchase at the Big Blue pro shop if you forget.

What kind of goggles are best for young swimmers?

Look for goggles with a soft, flexible seal that sits comfortably around the eye socket without leaving marks. The seal should create light suction without being tight. For beginners, simple recreational goggles work well before investing in anything more specialized.

Do I need to bring shampoo and soap to Big Blue?

No. Every Big Blue Swim School has showers on the pool deck with soap dispensers. You are welcome to bring your own travel-size products if you prefer, but it is not necessary.

What color swimsuit is safest for kids?

Bright, high-contrast colors like neon orange, yellow, and lime green provide the best visibility in the water and especially in open water settings. Testing by ALIVE Solutions Inc. found these colors to be the most visible, making them the safest choice.

Are swim caps required at Big Blue Swim School?

No. Swim caps are optional at Big Blue, but they are recommended for children with longer hair or hair that covers their ears. They help keep hair out of the face during lessons and help goggles stay in place.

What do parents do during swim lessons at Big Blue?

Every Big Blue Swim School has a comfortable parent viewing lounge with seating and Wi-Fi. Parents and caregivers can watch their child’s entire lesson from the lounge. Bring a book, tablet, or just enjoy watching your swimmer grow.
